Is it ever going to get warm in Chicago or am I going to have to sit and watch True Crime shows forever? Okay, so like.. Listen. I’m a huge true crime fan. Like huge. I’m gonna tell you my top 5 favorite shows in a second….but first, I have to show you two new items in my closet that were pretty much made for me.
Fan Friday: True Crime
I’m not a graphic tee girl. That’s never my am. Yet, when I laid eyes on this shirt from Kellan and Company, I couldn’t resist. My entire WINTER has been summed up in three lines and the shirt matches my Forever 21 pink leather jacket.
My generation is the Netflix and Chill generation. Which, before I found out what that actually meant, I was really stoked. I can go on a date and binge watch Supernatural? Great, I need to get caught up. Hope my date starts at 10am, because now that I’m a full time photographer.. I’m gonna be knocked out before mid-season. The only thing that’s gonna wake me up is the infamous Carry on My Wayward Son season finale.
That’s off topic.
This shirt describes my perfect Friday night. My wine drink of choice right now?
Nightjar. I’m not normally a wine person but my friends took me to a Coopers Hawk wine tasting and that kinda change my mind. Romance Red is my choice because it’s sweet, but… Nightjar is not your average bottle.
Now. The Reason We’re All here. The True Crime.
Let me preface this by explaining how I got into true crime. When I was a child, I grew up on the south side of Chicago. Criminals were getting away with everything. I was genuinely terrified of everything. I remember constantly asking.. What kind of people do these things. My grandfather, a retired Chicago policeman said to me– “Those people have problems that people don’t understand.” It became an interest of mine to understand, so I would be less afraid. Before I wanted to be a photographer, I wanted to be a lawyer, and before that I was interested in finding a job that allowed me to analyze the mind of criminals.
If I’m being honest, the concept of that is actually scary. I don’t think I could ever witness it first hand. That’s when I began to read, watch, and research true crime. I never wanted to tell my children I didn’t know what sort of dangers they would face.
I’m super into true crime. Like, I watch all the “boring” ones where they assess someone’s psychological mindset from birth too.
However, my favorite true crime shows.. The ones with the reenactments.
Deadly Women is my first favorite. Their reenactments are so real. It really paints the narrative of the story but also, if you watch it enough.. You see which actresses they’ve casted more than once to demonstrate the menacing murderous women.
The First 48 was the first ever True crime show I saw and honestly.. My face every episode was:
Witnessing detectives RACE the clock to find criminals spark so much intrigue to me. The pressure is on, and I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s nail biting.
Forensics Files is my go-to. It’s the least scariest version of learning about criminology from a scientific side and the people they interview are so honest, it’s so raw, and it’s groundbreaking. Without Forensics, cases wouldn’t be solved. Even more, FF actually has a few episodes where they show how Forensics has proved a man who held a guilty sentence innocent when he couldn’t. That is incredible to me. In society today, there are so many wrongly accused people who serve real time because there was no evidence to prove their innocence. It’s because of forensics that these people can get a fair trial and the real criminal can be found.
So, I’ve Shared One of The Genres of Television that I’m a Fan of.. What about you? What sort of television gets you hooked?
