This year, I did something an alternative fashion blogger should always do. I challenged myself to clean out my closet. I didn’t wanna just throw my clothes away. I wanted to make it a fun challenge! So, I’m really into the idea of creating a look based off of a single item. It makes for a fun challenge. This year I’m trying to get a little more experimental with my alternative fashion. Next week, you’ll see me introducing a brand new section of the ClaustroClothic alternative fashion blog to you. It’s going to be something you’re gonna be invited to join, so I hope you’re ready. Anyway!
ClaustroClothic #18: Single Item Challenge // Alternative Fashion
What Inspired this Outfit?
I bought these socks at the end of last year, right before Halloween. There were supposed to go together with this bloody look I was planning for a Suicide Girls Burlesque show I didn’t end up attending. I had already bought shoes and even made a jacket for it, but I never actually put together the rest of the outfit.I decided that I would create a look based off the socks, seeing as though I never actually wore them. One item. One mission. To create a really awesome alternative fashion look off of them.
Here’s a sneak peek of the jacket I made:
How It Felt When I First Put it On.
This look took a lot of contemplation. I never think about tops when I put together looks, and I knew whatever the shirt was going to be, it had to be… the pop that put it all together. I had to really go to the drawing boards for this one. I was thumbing through Depop one day when my eyes caught this Deandri top. I’ve always been a huge fan of Deandri, because I love collard tops. There was no way I was passing that up. To my surprise, it was the piece I was missing for this look and when I put it on, I thought to myself success!
What was the best Part of this outfit?
Finally getting to wear my skirt! I found this white pleated tennis skirt at a thrift store, and lost my mind. I remember walking up to the register giddily imagining how many outfits I was gonna put together with it! Guess how many I actually put together? Yep. You guessed it. Zero. It’s white! I got anxiety remembering one time I wore a white shirt to a party, and laughed so hard I fell backwards into a whole plate of salsa. I’m clumsy like that.
Why you should try the Single Item Challenge.
Even if you’re not into alternative fashion specifically, this should be something you’re thinking about! We’re all guilty of buying a piece of clothing that we are never gonna wear. In your brain, you’re gonna find all the perfect items to serve a real look. Lately I’ve been hooked on the Konmari method but really confused about how to identify articles of clothing that spark joy. Needless to say, it’s been a long time since I pieced together an outfit that almost made me jump for joy… This was it. I’ll be doing more single item challenges to get rid of those pesky pieces of clothing I bought or kept but can’t style them to save my life.
It’s a fun one way to confront the way you buy clothes. I can’t tell you how many items I’ve pulled out my closet and am planning to challenge myself with! Are you planning to stick around for more?
