The Mission Is What Matters:
Nikki Wood – The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Cosplay Back Story
Nikki Wood was the third POC slayer to make a debut on Buffy behind the First Slayer and Kendra. “She was cunning, resourceful, and oh, did I mention? Hot. I could have danced all night with that one.“- Spike She was ultimately defeated by Spike on a New York Train fight and left behind a son who sought out revenge. In Season 7, there was an episode called Lies My Parents Told Me where Nikki said the infamous line — “The Mission Is What Matters” in response to leaving her son to go and take care of her duties as a slayer. That got a lot of negative feedback from fans. It implied that Nikki loved her job as the slayer more than she loved her own son. Seven years, she fulfilled her duty and she knew what her calling was.
Her husband, Li was killed by a ring of vampires and I imagine that was when the importance of slaying got real. In my head, Nikki became hardened into this sacred slayer by means of survival and mission to save the world. So this part one of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer cosplay is meant to show that side of Nikki. The one who had lost her lover, the one who trained vigorously and took heed to her watcher… The slayer with a mission. Fun Fact: When asked who the father of her son Robin Wood was, Nikki was quoted to say that she didn’t “take names when blowing off steam” and I just felt like that was really interesting!
So Imagine This:
That same, hardened, angry woman you’ve seen aggressively pursue her mission as a young slayer who has just lost her lover and found out she was pregnant. Now the mission is real because aside from saving the world from the hellmouth, she has a son to protect.
